Connection Seeking Behaviour

What do we do when we don’t feel heard? We get louder! There are many reasons why children may experience poor or inconsistent responses from their primary caregiver. Long working hours, family stress, parental mental health difficulties, poverty, inconsistent household routines and family rituals, and more, can all lead to feelings of insecurity and a child’s need to feel seen and heard. This behaviour can surface as negative “disruptive” behaviour, or positive “over-pleasing” behaviour, including learned helplessness and an over-reliance on teacher support. Either way, connection seeking behaviour can make teaching challenging. The good news is that when a child feels seen or heard in the classroom, the need is met and the behaviour ceases.
